A Referral Program will Reap Rewards

How To get more clients All Year Round without much effort with simple

Hair Salon Marketing Strategies

HOW?? That is what you saying right? Easy!

A Simple Referral program!

Now I can just hear a gasp from many of you –

Many of you will think “Fantastic, show me how, I think that is one great idea for my Hair or Spa salon”

Then others will think “A referral Program, Man do they want to send me broke? Far, Far too costly!” and will dismiss the idea, and never read on.

Sad but true!

What is also true is that a referral program is not costly, and can make you heaps of money with this simple Hair Salon Marketing Strategy!

Look last night, I paid my staff overtime and sent out for some Chinese, Ribs, plus plenty of Chocolate bars for dessert, and asked them to come up with an extremely affordable, cost effective best ever Referral Program.

Results = An Effective, easy to implement programme, that you can even get your junior to implement for you if you are so busy!

What did they come up with and how does it work?

Firstly, you use your own clients.

The idea is simply using your business cards

  • On the front Referral Program
  • Your logo and usual information
  • Back of card.
  • Existing client name
  • New client
  • Date booked

Your clients will be given 5 of these referral business cards to pass out to their friends, work mates or family. Hair Salon Marketing Strategies do not cost the earth at www.salonmarketingstarterkit.com

In return for recommending their friends etc., the client will get either a FREE service from your salon worth XYZ or a HUGE discount to make it worthwhile for them to tell others about you. Remember one thing – MONEY TALKS!

I am in Favour of offering a huge discount – you keep enough to cover the cost of the product for service you have chosen to discount

Evergreen clients returning sounds too good to be true-It’s not hard and I used this in my own Salons and it brought great rewards

For Example, let’s say you offer $60 off their next service, say that includes having colour work, cut etc. Now the colour has only really cost you say $5 – $10 at the very most plus your labour.

If in beauty it could be $XYZ off a deluxe facial

You have all heard the term; ‘think out of the box’ this is what you need to do with this one.

It works amazingly well.

Fire that client -it’s unthinkable but you Must do this

Salon Marketing Ideas

You can do many things to bring in customers with your salon marketing ideas with 99.9% of them happy. However, there is always that one client, who stops are nothing and complains.

BEFORE YOU DO ONE MORE PIECE OF SALON MARKETING, YOU NEED TO FIRE THAT CLIENT!

Does any of this sound familiar to you?

She is late for every appointment, no call to tell you so, even though she does have a mobile.

She is cranky, because she is late, not late for you, but the appointments that comes next. (Is this our fault??)

She now complains about the text messages she received about the fantastic offers available

during the month, and then at the same time now goes into the emails she has had.

It never dawns on her that she could read them and see she has control over what she has in her inbox and UNSUBSCRIBE! After all she did agree to receive them in the first place.

Then she goes for it- she continues to complain that the shampoo gives her an itchy scalp, even though you change this every-time she comes in.

Next tells us she can’t afford our ‘new prices’, which we haven’t put up for ages (another mistake).

The haircut was not up to normal standard and so once again you placate’ this woman, we do this because we are taught that the customer is always right-WRONG!

Have you ever sat down and asked yourself ‘Why’ she keeps coming back for more?

Well it is because this woman is a Master; yes a Master act at getting things for nothing! She would even complain that the food served at the Queens garden party was crap!

If your salon was that bad, she wouldn’t come back time after time, after time!
All part of the act, that starts as whinging, whining and moaning as soon as she hits the deck outside your shop, so she gets free services etc.

Clients like this are no good for your sanity! They bemoan every thing you do, wear you down, and make you jump through hoops, even though you are doing a quality job.

What do you do? Take a deep breath, smile and say

“You have been coming here now for a while and all you do is complaining, we are constantly giving you free services – nothing is right in your eyes.”

You treat this salon with so much disrespect. I don’t want you to come back; you will have to find another salon to do your hair. Our books are now closed to you.

Slow days can Kill Your week by one Day

Tuesday, January 14th, 2014

Salon Marketing

Many Salon owners bemoan the fact they have slow days, no-shows, and one-time customers who never return, and due to this, they have a love/hate relationship with their salon.

Is it any wonder

The $$ income lost because of this would be horrendous.
But it doesn’t have to be that way, if you implement this simple, easy and so effective method of Salon Marketing.
Plain and simple you text your clients who have mobiles and agree to you contacting them via text for reminders and offers, honestly this is so exciting, and means extra $$$’s for your Salon.

What do you text

Appointment Reminders,
Offers if you get a cancellation
Special Discounts on Products
Coupons,
Hair Tips,
Beauty Tips,
And a whole lot more

YOU are keeping your clients informed; they (your clients) will feel very much part of your salon and will respond if done correctly.

Most people appreciate a reminder regarding their appointment date. Some may not be able to make it, and will rebook via SMS. This will cut down on your NO SHOWS.

If a person has to change their booking, you now SMS out to your clients who are not booked in for that month a special offer.
Example:”“available booking, Deluxe facial 5pm Tuesday 27th – 15% off, book now”

How many do you think will text back, a reply?
Now, what if you get more than one reply for the same booking?

Accept one, to the other text for example “booking taken, however, have one available Thursday 29th, 4.30pm same discount will apply”

YOU LOOK for an opening, as you have someone red hot and ready to purchase service, even if you have to work a little O/T it is worth it.

Cancellation on day of appointment Text “Available TODAY 3.30, cut, colour 10% off”
You are giving discounts by the way as a way of filling these spots quickly, and having a body on a bed or a bum in the seat.

More Salon Marketing Ideas

On your slow days, send out offers for that day. (Send them out early or the NIGHT before). Send out product offers especially on those days. Why? They come in for a product, and more often than not will say; oh can you fit me in for a trim? Can you fit “Little Johnny” in for a hair cut after school?”

It jogs memories, and calls people into action.
I read that 97% of all texts sent were read, and over 25% of people used their smart phones to access the internet.

Bring your Salon into the 21st century, and use this technology to increase your salons earnings.

Motivating Your Salon Staff

Saturday, January 11th, 2014

Marketing A Salon

This works like Gangbusters. We used to purchase small plastic containers like the small sauce bottles you get in the food malls these days and fill them with small samples.

It’s a really good way of enticing your customers to try something new, without the need of costing too much. You can always try asking your salon rep’s for demo bottles (they can be quite tight on times). Marketing A Salon can be inexpensive if you think ‘out of the box’.

It’s important to track which client has had which new product to try and a good idea to put this into your salon software Pos system as otherwise how will your staff remember?

Alternatively you can discuss with your client the product from the retail stand that you think will go well with their hair and do exactly the same thing. Get them to hold the bottle for you whilst you put this on to see if they are showing any interest.

When the client returns this will be discussed when the client sits in the chair to see and find out her hair responded to the new product line and the rest will be up the stylist to see if the product is a
‘good fit’ for the client.

You will sell more retail this way as the client is not committing herself fully to spending over $50.

‘Re-book and win’ for your staff.

Why not have a competition and put a notice out on the board in the back room. The prize can be cinema tickets (a pair), money but remember it’s really important to know what your staff are motivated by as otherwise it will be a flop.

Each time the clients re-book they go onto the chart out the back room and the winner at the end of the day or week (would be better) get’s the prize.

Apprentice

It is often difficult to keep your apprentices motivated and what really worked in our Salon was to put them on a small incentive scheme.

We gave them extra to be agreed upon at the start, say $10 for up-selling eyebrow waxing or some other service that they could do themselves, agree how many you expect from them at the start of the week.
Make it a fun week and it will get the staff highly motivated and at your next staff meeting you need to bring this up and compare this week with the promotion as opposed to the ‘normal’ weeks without the incentive.

It will be interesting to see the outcome.

4 Ways to Motivate your Salon Staff

Wednesday, January 8th, 2014

Marketing Salon

Competition among staff can be a good motivation tool as long as it’s done in a fun way and a staff member benefits at the end of the day.

It goes without saying that you will need to know what makes your salon staff tick, are they motivated by money, cinema tickets, time off, you get the idea.

A simple idea is to Market Salon have a $10 note as the prize for selling retail. Keep the ten dollar prize in their sights where they can see this, to remind them of what the challenge is about. A bit like the pass the parcel game we used to play when we were kids.

So every time someone sells retail they can put a hat on or beep a horn, make it a fun thing and whoever ends up with the hat at the end of the day, they get the prize.

What about having the Retail product of the week, you can place this into your newsletter, face book and Twitter and get a buzz going around the salon. You can promote this into your salon in so many different ways.

You can also give the responsibility for this to one of your staff members who will take responsibility for doing this out of your hands, remember to delegate as you cannot do everything! You can also with this have an incentive scheme in place for staff members to up sell to their clients and it’s a ‘win win’ for all.

If you have apprentices or looking to add value to your client’s service, then a simple hand massage works wonders. Whilst there are waiting for the colour to finish off or simply as a way of doing something over and above their normal service this always goes down well. If you have staff that are still training this is a great ‘training tool’ to get them to talk to the clients and it helps build their confidence.

Depending on how your day is progressing there are always I mean always ways of increasing revenue. You can easily do a small promotion on your face book or even mobile promotional offer. You can do a 2 for 1 special on a certain range of products just for ‘today only’.

Your answer machine is a cash Register

Sunday, January 5th, 2014

Spa Salon Marketing

Many Salons I talk to leave their answer machine on all the time-money is being left on the table with countless Salons following this practice-Why…

Getting your telephone to ring is critical to the survival of your business. Many of you spend many dollars on marketing to make this happen, but when it does, your telephone techniques may let you down.

I know for a fact this happens in many salons

• An Answering Machine for any Spa Salon Marketing can take the call telling your caller you are busy and to leave their name and phone number (I would think – why should I, if you are too busy to take my call, then you are too busy to take me on as a client)

• An apprentice without much experience answers the phone and cannot give correct advice when asked (I would think – Wow, if this the best that this salon has to offer, I will keep on ringing until I find someone who can answer my queries)

• A more senior staff member answers the call and rushes the caller. (I would think – This person did not give me the time of day, I think I will take my business elsewhere, I am getting the feeling I am not important)

I agree that the phone can interfere with your client’s service and it’s a double edge sword, if the phone doesn’t ring you are not cutting and earning! You have to find a way to answer that phone, there are digital phones available now and can easily be in any of your rooms in your beauty salon or placed anywhere in your hair salon. Just think about this from a new client or existing client’s perspective.

Spa Salon Marketing Tips

Make sure the answering machine is only used at night, and that a qualified staff member answers the phone every time during business hours. Always get that person to ask the name of the caller immediately, and if the person if not sure of what they want, EXPLORE a little before making the appointment.

Get their Phone No) If the caller is still unsure then suggest you make the booking for XYZ time, and invite them to come in 15 minutes earlier where they can have a cup of tea or coffee and look at some hair styling books if you are a Hair Salon or read about the various kinds of facial or treatments if a beauty salon.

Remember the client is Queen/King from the moment you pick up the phone. The client is not compelled to do business with you. There are many choices available to them. You MUST invest time and interest at this time, stand out from the rest and Treat them like “GOLD”.

Re-bookings are Gold in your Salon

Thursday, January 2nd, 2014

Re-Booking are Gold

In discussions with many salon owners, I still find it a mystery that while the client is paying for their makeover and products another appointment is not booked and handed to them on a business card.

This is the best time to get them booked in as they are feeling relaxed and rejuvenated from their makeover.

This is like $$$$$ in the bank…

I have heard all manner of excuses as to why this is not done:

• Don’t want to pressure the client

• The client never remembers the appointment anyway

• Business cards are too expensive

• My staff is hopeless and always forget and don’t have time. (To make more money?)

I won’t go on, because honestly it is a load of BS. It is in that “Minimum attention gets you maximum results” area. Salon Marketing online can be easily done in any Salon.

Your staff all need to be trained to re-book appointments as a matter of course. This should start at the time your client is sitting in the chair and a discussion should take place as to ‘how’ your client can keep their hair in the style they are looking for within a specific time period and agree on that. Then when you get to the counter this will not be an issue.

Salon Marketing Online

Just like discussing and showing your clients the products used on their hair or body, your staff need to be trained into re-booking appointments as part of their job description. Your staff work for you! This is a no brainer.

How easy is it before the money is taken to say “That style should last for 6 weeks. We can fit you in on the Tuesday like today, or would a Thursday be more convenient?” Have the page open at the appropriate date and pencil poised to re-book and then the date and time written on a business card.

It should also be policy to ring the client a couple of days before the next appointment for confirmation or change in case the client finds they cannot attend. It is always a good idea to have a phone number with the booking, as this makes the process so much more efficient.

If you really wanted to reinforce the re-booking and get clients really interested, one trick a Salon I know puts the names of all clients who re-book into a crystal bowl and draws 3 names out every 3 months. Those lucky people get a choice of either 5 free foils or any products with a value of $40. She changes the prizes every 3 months. Her re-booking rate now is almost 100% as a result. Let’s face it you have to be “in” it to “win” it.
